When our clients are researching Pilates and determining which Pilates method they want to choose, often we get questions about how methods differ. This post gives a brief opinion about the STOTT PILATES® training program for certifying Pilates instructors.
We really like the STOTT PILATES® method. It is one of our favorite certifications. Not all of our instructors are STOTT PILATES® certified, however some are. The benefits of the STOTT PILATES® method is its rigorous education, focus on safety and alignment, adaptability within exercises, attention to sports medicine science and its ease of use. STOTT PILATES® has fantastic equipment, some of which you will find here at Pilates Northwest in Seattle. The STOTT PILATES® methodology is great because it recognizes that we all have different bodies and different needs in our Pilates sessions. We like that the STOTT PILATES® method views neutral spinal curves as necessary and desirable. We like curves in our spines – curves help us stay upright with great posture. We focus on postural optimization and respect that spines need curves to balance the body’s postural alignment properly.
The Pilates method was developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates. Among the principles central to the Pilates method is the importance of strengthening the muscles at the core of the body. By doing this, you can improve your posture and alignment, as well as increase your flexibility.
STOTT PILATES® takes very current knowledge of exercise science and sports medicine and incorporates new research and experience into Pilates. Like the original Pilates method, STOTT PILATES® strives to strengthen the body without building bulk. Among the changes emphasized by the STOTT PILATES® method is increased preparation before each exercise session.
